Bedrock Erosion by Debris Flows at Chalk Cliffs, Colorado, USA: Implications for Bedrock Channel Evolution

نویسندگان

چکیده

Debris flow erosion into bedrock helps to set the pace of mountain denudation, but there are few empirical observations this process. We studied effects debris flows on using Structure-From-Motion photogrammetry and multiple real-time monitoring measurements. found that distribution across channel cross-section could be generalized as an exponentially decreasing function height above thalweg. Using function, we simulated at a after theoretical passage migrating knickpoint effectively matching upstream pre-knickpoint cross-sectional shape downstream post-knickpoint via debris-flow erosion.

Experimental study of bedrock erosion by granular flows*

[1] Field studies suggest that bedrock incision by granular flows may be the primary process cutting valleys in steep, unglaciated landscapes. An expression has been proposed for debris flow incision into bedrock which posits that erosion rate depends on stresses due to granular interactions at the snout of debris flows. Here, we explore this idea by conducting laboratory experiments to test th...

Weathering and erosion of fractured bedrock systems

We explore the contribution of fractures (joints) in controlling the rate of weathering advance for a low-porosity rock by using methods of homogenization to create averaged weathering equations. The rate of advance of the weathering front can be expressed as the same rate observed in non-fractured media (or in an individual block) divided by the volume fraction of nonfractured blocks in the fr...

A nonlocal theory of sediment buffering and bedrock channel evolution

[1] Bedrock erosion in mountain river channels ultimately sets the erosion rate of the surrounding hillslopes and the rate of sediment supply to the channels. The supply of coarse bed sediment acts as a dampening effect on further erosion by depositing an alluvial cover that temporarily obscures the bedrock. For landscapes where the residence time of the alluvial bed cover is comparable to the ...

Controls and limits on bedrock channel geometry

[1] Data on channel geometry in naturally incising bedrock rivers reveal variable relationships between channel width, slope, and erosion rate. To explain the range of relationships between these parameters, we propose an optimized channel geometry model. The model reproduces previous theoretical and numerical modeling scaling relationships; however, to explain the field data, the model must in...
